Students' Union : a way not a destination

Once Upon a time there was a Students Union

It’s been 35 years completed on students' union ban in Pakistan. Today if you ask a 25-year-old student about students ‘union, he will get astonished and will stare you in the face because he has never saw such a thing in his whole life. He did not know about, that there were elections to held regularly in every college and university, every year, in which students had to elect their representative, and in this way a council was formed, which had its secretory and president and other designations, and this wasn’t just a council but it was like a small government of students which has to work with the establishment of the institution i.e. Head, teachers and other staff to organize co-curricular activities for students like Poetic symposium (Mushaira مشاعرہ‎), debates, discussion forums, Bait Bazi (Urdu: بیت بازی), Qirat , Naath and sport competition. Book Fairs etc.,
Moreover, distinguished personalities were used to be invited to benefit students from his thoughts and they had to learn from his experiences and solicitate their future ventures in the light of the guidance they received from.
In fact, these were the healthy and positive traditions of our educational institutions that have played a big role to prevent everybody in universities from the negativity i.e. narrow-mindedness and extremism. Student were trained to think democratically and respect the opposite opinions with tolerance. They were enabled to understand their rights and responsibilities.
The interesting part was that, when there was election in University of Karachi, different groups with different ideologies used to arrange gathering, deliver speeches to attract student toward them and in this way, they used to speak against each other but this all was happening in a very polite environment, after jeering and quipping they used to sit on the same table in a canteen to share and discusses various students’ issues and problem to brainstorm and solve.
In the past, this platform has produced a lot of legends in every field of life, especially in politics, it has produced much mature patriotic politician and leaders who strive to bring this country on right track.
In the presence of student’s union platform, there were miner cases seen where students went for fight, clashes, and un-tolerance but unfortunately all the negative trends broke out after the ban on student’s union and we are facing the consequences until now.
Today student is kind of person ,that has been restrained and dispersed in various circles. Tolerance, patience, forgiveness, is departed from his behavior and attitudes. There would be some other reason as well but the trend of open discussion is faded away from our society and that’s why our society stands as a static and frozen one.
In my opinion Zul Fiqqar Ali Butto and Zia ul Haq are both responsible for this blunder, as one wanted to limit the student’s activities and freedom of expression on national issues to protect their mistakes and the other putted a ban to protect his dictatorship.
